A psychological evaluation/assessment is completed in order to help provide you or a third party with information about your psychological, cognitive, or neurological functioning. These services are typically provided by a doctoral-level psychologist and involve an in-depth interview as well as administration of standardized and validated measures. The interview typically involves answering questions about your developmental, family, educational, medical, mental, criminal, and substance use history. Other topics may be discussed as well, if pertinent. Standardized measures are then administered which may involve you being asked to complete various tasks, solve puzzles, or answer questionnaires. The process may take one or more sessions and each session typically lasts a couple of hours. After the interview and measures have been completed the psychologist will score and interpret all data and compile the information into a report. The report is then provided to you and/or an authorized third party. Feedback is also provided to you and/or authorized parties to answer any questions or concerns regarding the report and any diagnoses, conclusions, or recommendations.
In the case of forensic evaluations, the purpose of the evaluation is to help the court answer a specific legal question which may apply to civil or criminal cases. Forensic evaluations may be ordered by a judge (court-ordered) or be requested by an attorney. Court-ordered evaluations are provided to the court. Evaluations requested by attorneys may or may not be released to the court depending on various factors.
